French Portfolio
La Place, Langé
This was a typical small country property that was in need of substantial care and attention. The previous owner drew water from a well and had a few bare light bulbs! The house has been transformed into a comfortable holiday home for the owner and his family.
New country house at Massos
In 2003 we were contacted by a young english couple who had purchased a concrete framed ruin that was an abandoned project for a care home. Set in glorious countryside, the problem was ‘what can we do with it’? The result has exceeded their expectations, and the family now share their time between France and the UK.
Barn conversion, Gramat
This beautiful barn was not only in a wonderful location, having tremendous character and lovely stonework, but it boasted two of the largest oak beams we have seen at floor level, running the length of the building. This feature was kept visible, and the large barn volume above was shown off to advantage.
Two Villas in Llauro
This small development of two villas on a sloping site on the edge of a pretty village was required to appear as a single dwelling by the Planning Authority. This was achieved by linking the two houses with covered terraces, that gave the impression of a single mass but gave the privacy and separation that was preferred by the developer.
Farmhouse Mas in Pyrenees
Of all the french properties we have seen, this building has the most fabulous location. Not only is it a beautiful example of a traditional farmhouse ‘Mas’, but it was virtually untouched and retained a wealth of historic features. Work progresses slowly and carefully.
Village Barn, Genouillé
This unusual barn was located in the centre of a small village not far from the church and Mairie. Whilst being a large building, the lower floor had limited scope for external openings, and the decision was made to place a very large living space at first floor, with the less used guest bedrooms below at ground level. A two storey dining and kitchen area was placed to one side, looking out to the garden, with views from the upper spaces provided by a long ‘clerestory’ window along almost the whole of the western elevation.
Villa, Les Pountets, Malviés
Whilst it is relatively rare to purchase a site for a new house in Britain, there are many more opportunities to do so in France. This site has far ranging views over the vineyards towards Limoux and the Pyrenees beyond. The design provides a protected heart to the house, with covered verandas for the hot summers and the cooling effect of a pool to create a comfortable micro climate. In winter these areas are also protected from the winds by the ‘wings’ formed by the living room and guest annexe.
New Villa, Les Hauts de Vinas
My Client’s brief was to ensure that they would be able to appreciate and admire the flood-lit cathedral of Lodève in the valley below their site whilst enjoying a drink on the terrace. The design provides spectacular views over the swimming pool, whilst providing privacy from the road, admittedly little used, that runs behind.
